David Milsom's work strikes a pragmatic balance between scholarly insight and musical intuition.

Head of Performance at Huddersfield University, he leads the Nineteenth-Century Performance Research Group (NPRG) in the Research Centre for Performance Practices.

He is widely published on the subject of performance practice, and presents regularly at conferences in and outside of the UK.

Having initially specialised in nineteenth-century string playing practices, David has since broadened his investigations to encompass the changing performance styles of the twentieth century.

July 2019

Current work on sabbatical includes a new monograph on nineteenth-century violin performance for Boydell and Brewer, a book chapter for Oxford University Press, and a variety of concert activity.

Behind the scenes, work continues on the Bach Violin Project, editing material to date, and preparing the final two works for recording at the end of 2019.

Development work is also in progress on a new Huddersfield University-based recordings label, Pennine Records, of which David’s recording of Brahms sonatas op 120/1, 120/2 and 108 will be the first release, the CHASE project website, of which David is now directo, and developing the ‘Nineteenth Century Performance Research Group’ within the Research Centre for Performance Practices (ReCePP).
